Quick-Change Tool Holder for Lathe

Precision Machining Solutions
Prize $600 + Interview
Due December 20, 2025

Design a quick-change tool holder system for CNC lathes that maintains sub-micron repeatability.

Problem Statement

Tool changes on CNC lathes are time-consuming and require re-zeroing. Design a quick-change system that allows tool swaps in < 10 seconds while maintaining positioning repeatability of < 2µm.

Requirements

  • Repeatability: ±2µm in X and Z axes
  • Tool change time: < 10 seconds
  • Support tools up to 25mm shank diameter
  • Resist cutting forces: 5kN
  • Coolant-sealed design

Constraints

  • Compatible with standard CNC lathe turrets
  • Hardened tool steel construction
  • No pneumatic or hydraulic actuation
  • Manufacturing tolerances: ±5µm or better

Deliverables

  • Complete CAD assembly (STEP + native files)
  • GD&T drawings for critical components
  • FEA stress analysis
  • Kinematic coupling analysis
  • Machining and heat treatment specifications
